Beginner's guide to crocheting

Learn to Crochet with Kristy — Beginner Class

In this cozy and confidence-building crochet class, you’ll learn how to hold your yarn and hook comfortably, tie a slipknot, work a chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet, and how to read a simple pattern. We'll talk yarn anatomy (yes, it's a thing!). We’ll also chat tools, fiber types, next steps, and how to avoid common pitfalls that trip up new crocheters (spoiler: yarn chicken is real).

Skills Needed:

None! This class is absolutely beginner-friendly. Whether you’ve never touched a crochet hook or you haven’t picked one up since your grandma tried to teach you in 1983, you’re welcome here.

Materials:

All materials are provided!

A non-refundable $15 materials fee is included in your ticket price. This helps your instructor prep quality supplies in advance, so everything’s ready for you on class day. If life throws a wrench in your plans and you need to cancel, we totally get it — but the materials fee is nonrefundable.

Kristy has been crocheting since 2007 and teaching fiber arts for nearly two decades. Her fiber journey began when her mother taught her to knit on Christmas Day 2004 — and she's been hooked (pun intended) ever since. With experience as a technical editor, sample maker, custom designer, and Artist-in-Residence, Kristy brings a deep well of knowledge, quirky joy, and compassionate instruction to every class. She's also a Navy veteran living with C-PTSD, who considers crochet and knitting both creative therapy and divine calling. Every stitch she makes is rooted in prayer, gratitude, and the quiet art of healing.

As an instructor, she’s methodical but flexible. Kristy adapts to your unique hand mechanics and learning style (because let’s be honest — no two people hold a hook the same way, and that’s okay). Past students describe her as calm, encouraging, and remarkably good at helping things click where other classes haven’t. She’s here to make sure your first crochet experience is both successful and fun — ideally with a few good laughs along the way.

Crafting community… one stitch at a time.

Important Note:

This class is intended for adults only. The techniques taught require a level of hand dexterity and sustained focus that may be tricky for younger learners. Keep an eye on the calendar for youth-specific classes. Private and small group instruction available by request.

Class fee: $45

Beginner Knitting

🧶 Learn to Knit with Kristy — Beginner Class

Come join us for a warm, welcoming class designed just for beginners! Whether you’re brand new to knitting or haven’t picked up needles since the 90s, this class will give you the confidence (and calm) to get started.

You'll learn the foundations: how to tie a slipknot, cast on, work the knit stitch, and bind off. We’ll also cover yarn anatomy (yes, that’s a thing!), choosing tools, and what to try next. This is more than just a class — it’s an invitation into a time-honored, soul-soothing tradition that has kept hands busy, minds calm, and hearts connected for generations.

No experience? No problem. Kristy’s been knitting since 2004 and brings over two decades of experience in fiber arts to the table — including teaching, technical editing, and professional finishing. You can find her handmade awesomeness at local shops in the upstate and in-person at pop-up markets throughout the year. She’s a Navy veteran with C-PTSD who calls knitting her therapy and testimony — every stitch is a quiet prayer of gratitude, and she delights in passing that joy to her students.

Her teaching style? Methodical, flexible, and peppered with humor — because your hands might fumble at first, but that doesn’t mean your confidence has to. Past students have described Kristy as patient, calming, and surprisingly good at helping things “click”.

🧶 Skills Needed:

None at all! This class is ideal for true beginners or those looking for a gentle, total refresher.

🧶 Materials:

No need to bring anything — all materials are provided!

There is a non-refundable $15 materials fee, included in your ticket price, to allow Kristy to prepare your supplies in advance. Life happens, and we understand cancellations — but this fee helps keep things running smoothly for everyone.

Join us and learn a skill you can take anywhere — from your couch to your quiet time, to gifting your first handmade heirloom. Let’s knit something beautiful together.

Crafting community…one stitch at a time.

Adults only, please. Keep an eye on the calendar for youth-specific classes. Private and small group instruction available by request.

What you will learn in class: -How to Cast On -Tunisian Simple Stitch -Tunisian Slip Stitch Bind-Off -How to read a simple pattern We will discuss the different types of hooks and other useful tools for those who are just beginning their adventure with fiber arts. This class is appropriate for absolute beginners, but prior crochet experience is definitely helpful. We will make a practice piece in class and start your first official project. You will be making a face scrubby in class and start on a dishcloth as well for you to finish at home. You will go home with a reference sheet that will include detailed descriptions of what we covered in class. Materials needed: None! All materials will be provided for this class. There is a nonrefundable materials fee of $20 that is included in your ticket fee. We do understand things happen and people have to cancel classes, but the materials fee is nonrefundable. This allows the instructor to order the materials in a timely manner for the class. Instructor: Kristy Hendricks Kristy has over 20 years experience in fiber arts. As an instructor, she has a very methodical approach, but after many years of working with all kinds of students (and varying levels) she has learned to make adjustments on-the-fly to fit individual mechanics. She has been noted by past students as being incredibly calm and patient, which has allowed many students to fully understand fiber arts, where other instructors have failed. High praise fuels her passion to further a love of the fiber arts for all who express desire.
